This page provides macro analyses on short interests in different sectors and highlights the top hedge funds most active in short trading in UK.
The chart compares the prevalence of a sector in the short register against that sector's place in the economy.
The series share of registered companies shows the percentage of all registered companies in the country active in that sector.
The series share of all shorts shows the percentage of companies (aka issuers) with at least one short position against them relative to the count of all companies in the same sector and country.
When the orange bar exceeds the white line for a sector, it could indicate a build-up of short bets against a specific sector in the economy.
Sector and country information is obtained from different sources and is cross-checked by us. We drop observations for which either sector or main country of activity for a publicly listed company is not easy to establish.
The number of companies registered in a country is proxied by the country of the headquarters of a listed company. For instance, if a Japanese company is listed on the Paris Stock Exchange, we would not count that company in any sector in France despite the listing.
